Besides declare Waaaagh on the other gaming tables, of course? Bad Orky gorilla jokes aside, recently I decided to set up all my Ork models to take some pictures for the blog and prep for an upcoming Apocalypse game. As it turns out I have a bunch of models, an embarrassing large amount actually, so many in fact that I may be feeling little self conscious about it (lols don't judge me).
So I set them all up nice and neat, and snapped a few pics. Below is the list of whats actually in the army, which sadly typed out doesn't seem as big as it looks. Regardless, you may recognize some of the models as they have been featured here on Spikey Bits in the past. Check it out.
Da Models:
- 30 (or so) Gretchin mostly converted from Gnoblars with Goblin heads (Plastic Grot kits came out too late for this guy), and three Runt Herds.
- 1 Custom Converted Snikrot Model and 15 commandos with gasmask heads.
- Six Killa Kans
- Three Deff Dreads
- 12 Boyz with Rokkits for assignment to squads
- 9 Boyz with Burnas for assignemnt into squads
- 3 Boyz with Big Shootas (in addition to six already in squads)
- THREE Squads of 12 Nob Bikers (total 36 Nob Bikers) each complete with 5 Power Claws, Waaaagh banner, Rokkits, Pain Boy and other combi weapons.
- Sixty Slugga Choppa Boyz with Power Claw Nobz
- Sixty Shoota Boys with 6 Big Shootas and two Claw Nobz
- about 30 Stormboyz
- 6 Deff Koptas
- One Nobz Squad of ten armed like bikers.
- Five Battlewagons
- Six Trukks
- Two Kustom Battle Fortresses made from multiple Battlewagon Kits
- One Big Mek Stompa with converted Lifta Droppa, Shield Generators, and other weapons (washed and drybrushed)
- One Normal Stompa
- One Magenitzed Stompa with extra arm (resting on shoulder comes off) to make Goff Claw Stompa.
- Custom Converted Ghazkull made from an Ogyrn, and black reach bits.
- Zagstrukk
- Two Big Meks with Kustom Force Field. One a complete scratch build.
- Big Mek with Shokk Attack Gun
Well after all that I realized I probably don't play with them that much anymore. I thought about it for awhile, whether I should put them up for sale to get them a good home and such, and I decided I'm not against selling them I suppose for the right price. Hopefully someone out there is interested, heck maybe I'll end up parting with my Orky Horde.
They are over on e-Bay right now if you happen to fancy being their next Warboss!
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!!!? -MBG
Well if you haven't heard by now, team Spikey Bits / Wrecking Crew won the 2011 Adepticon Team Championship. Our team featured the talents of Kenny Boucher (Wrecking Crew, Next Level Painting), TPM Paul Murphy (Wrecking Crew), Joshua Ginn, and myself MBG Rob Baer (Spikey Bits, Wrecking Crew).
Part of the Adepticon Weekend the Team Championship is a grueling event, this year with over 400 participants, (that's over 100 teams)! They basically invented the format, and some players come to Adepticon just for this event! Each round takes a player's 1,000 point list and pairs it up with a teammates at random forming a cohesive legal 2,000 point army. The last round is paired via captain's choice, so the strongest versions of each 2,000 point army can be fielded.
So that's it for this adventure folks, hopefully soon I'll have a report from our victory at the American Team Championships, and my second overall at placing at the Grim Open Nova Qualifier.

So it may come as no surprise that we ran Blood Angels, because as Marine armies go they seem to be the most powerful. They also have several good competitive builds that make them extremely popular on the tournament circuit. Now I have to preface this with the fact that Grey Knights are out and gaining in popularity, but there are still many Blood Angel players out there. Comparing and contrasting the two is probably an article for another day, suffice to say that the ability to take an Initiative 6 Halberd, most certainly gives the GK's the edge between the two at first glance.
The army we took is pretty simple and I regret that I don't have the exact lists we ran, but the basic 2000 points are below. Each one had two HQ's that varied between Mephiston, Dante, Sanguinator, and a Librarian with jump pack.
- 4 Five Man Assault Marines- 1 Melta, Rhino Extra Armor, Dozers
- 2 Ten Man Assault Marine Squads, Power Weapon, 2 Meltas
- 3 Sanguinary Priests one with jump pack and a power weapon
- 2 HQ's
- Two 5 Man Devastator Squads with 3 Rockets and 1 Lascannon.
The basic premise of the list is to close with the enemy using the fast rhinos as cover for the Assault Troops, and engage. Simple and effective, but you always have to keep in mind the Red Grail's radius out from the priests, as well as Sanginator's +1 attack bubble. It's pretty critical to keep those intact not just on the charge, but also after consolidation moves as well. Once you get good at doing this, you can master the list and move on to more complicated combinations of units.
Here's what each of our opponents fielded and a brief summary of how my team's 2000 points did against them.
Game 1 vs. Tyranids
This is the game that inspired the whole TPM rant on BoLS about not showing army lists with all your units abilites/ stats/ wargear on it. Debate aside there, we won the day by pincering the Nid Horde with Sanguinator on one side and Mephiston on the other. The monstrous creature tally was high that day, with Mephiston reaping a terrible toll.
Game 2 vs. Battlewagon / Nob Biker Orks
Our opponents were a French Canadian team that while very keen on rules, and tactics, were a little rusty on judging distances. After seizing and disabling the Battlewagons, I continuously pushed up my rhino wall daring the Nob Bikers to charge into them and thus springing the trap of awaiting assault troops. Instead they kept falling back, but eventually the retreating Orks were caught in assault and trapped into a war of attrition they could not win. Blood Angel Victory.
Game 3 vs Space Wolf Mechanized
We just pushed our line straight in and engaged the Sons of Russ point blank. While losses were heavy on our side, we managed to contest the necessary objective while securing ours (even with a late game backfield thrust by some mischievous wolf scouts.) Blood Angels Victory.
Game 4 vs. Fatecrusher (playing on table one)
After landing and being engaged immediately midfield Fateweaver and his merry band of Blood Crushers held on the the bitter end, almost draining enough of our forces to deny victory. Eventually the combine forces of the wonder twins, Mephiston and Sanguinator, carried the day and managed to hold the remaining line. Blood Angels Victory
Overall we played four great games, and had a blast. The terrain was great, everything was kept running smooth, and in the end we took it all. I would hands down recommend the event to any and all who are even thinking about it.

Welcome to the new segment here on Spikey Bits called Armies on Parade.
Wait whuuuuut you ask? Well Armies on Parade here at Spikey Bits is a daily pic of a sweet army (or two) that caught my eye at a major event such as Games Day, WarGamesCon, Adepticon, Etc. I tend to play in a lot of events, and am always on the lookout for good looking/ themed armies.

I have to admit, the one thing hobby related that I have always shied away from was doing snow on bases. No clue why.... I can pin, sculpt, build stuff from scratch etc, but I always run screaming when it comes to doing snow.
Why? I have no clue. I suppose it has to do with messing up and ruining a perfectly good model, or just being overwhelmed by the plethora of snow basing products out there. I mean how do you pick one over the other, right?
Well recently the time came to man up. I had Kenny over at Next Level Painting, paint up some Grey Knights for me while I get the time to get mine all finished up (working a lot sucks).
Problem is that I didn't like his Colorado-esqe snow basing. So I wanted to try out a different looking snow style, more "drifty" looking rather that "pile-ish" if that makes sense. Check out the "before" base with chunky snow piles, and my "after" snow drifts on the right.
Of course I still had no idea where to start, until I saw a sweet painted Tau army up at the store that had snow on the bases as well. After talking with the painter about how he got the effect, and how easy it was to do, I decided to give it a try on my Grey Knights!
Apparently all you need to make authentic looking snow effect on bases turns out to be some white (yes white don't use wood glue it's yellow- we all know what yellow snow is) PVA glue, and a one dollar box of arm and hammer baking soda from the grocery store! Yup that's it. Amazing!!!!!
Here's how to make it work. First apply some PVA glue to the base using a small dry brush or a large base-coat brush, whatever works for the size base you are working with. Then sprinkle on some Baking Soda, or to go a little faster and dip the whole model into a container of the stuff. Then do your next model and so forth.
When you get to the last man in the squad go back and re-flock or sprinkle from the beginning, as the glue will probably have absorbed all the power and looks a bit paste like by now. Repeat that until you get the look you are going for. I think I flocked them twice maybe three times on some of my bigger models.
Before After
Give em like twenty minutes to dry out, then tap the excess off. You may have to use water and a stiffer brush to get the power off the lip of the base but after that all you have to do is matte coat them and viola snow bases fast and cheap!
Squad 1 after flocking, but before matte coating. Note residual particles on lip of the base- be sure to clean them off with water and a stiffer brush before you matte coat!
What do you think? Is simpler better if it gets the result you are looking for? -MBG
Okay so first off yeah I suck.
June also marked the first anniversary of Richmond VA's very own, FTW Games Grand Opening. To celebrate the day, the sweetheart of Warhammer 40k Goatboy was in attendance for all the festivities. It's been a great first year and we look forward to many more.
I suck because, well I sold out the blog since May. Why, well long story short owning your own business makes for long hours sometimes. I know, I know, that's not your problem. You just want to read some sweet bat reps and hobby articles already. And seriously I own my own store so I should shut up cause its like everyone's dream, so let me just say it; I'm sorry. I'm sorry I left you with no sweet content. I'm sorry I haven't kept you up to speed about all the sweet events I've been a part of this year. It's not you- it's me, and I'm sorry. We're going to fix that all, starting now.
So lets get back up to speed shall we?
First off Team Spikey Bits/ Wrecking Crew won the 2011 Adepticon Team Tournament with Blood Angels. I owe you coverage I know, and you'll have it soon. But what you may not know is that our team plus Goatboy and Nick Rose (Darkwynn) combined to form team WreckingBoLS (get it) and also won the American Team Championships (ATC's) in May as well. I took my Looted Guard and didn't lose a game, Woots! Since then I've retired the Guard army from active play. If you happen to fancy it, well you're in luck. It's up on e-Bay right now for sale.
In June I went up to the Grim Open at Brothers Grim Games in Long Island NY and placed Second overall with my Iron Angels (Iron Hands counts as Blood Angels). So now I get to play in some sweet event at the Nova Open against other qualifier winners as well.
June also marked the first anniversary of Richmond VA's very own, FTW Games Grand Opening. To celebrate the day, the sweetheart of Warhammer 40k Goatboy was in attendance for all the festivities. It's been a great first year and we look forward to many more. Jim Howard won the Dreadknight Conversion Contest in May with his Tau Interdiction Armor.
So now that we're all caught up, and friends again let's move forward to what you really want to know about; WarGamesCon 2011.
We are onsite right now setting up the Spikey Bits Vendor Booth and making the final tweeks to our army lists. Me and Saint Gabriel will be playing in the Team Event with Blood Angels and Chaos, and I'll be using the Iron Angels again in the singles event!
Best of all is that I'll be posting pic and updates live each round from the floor on twitter! So checkout our tweets over the weekend for minute to minute coverage!
Okay that's it, that's all I got for now. See you soon via the tweets or the interwebz! -MBG
